Speedo Shopper
Introduction

My wife was going through the grocery list we have stuck to our fridge door one day, and decided we needed something more comprehensive than just a piece of paper with items written on it. She wanted more detail. A way of keeping track of prices for each item, and a total for the list. With prices as high as they are, she wanted to stay within the budget. She also needed to be able to print out a detailed list to take to the store with her. Something that would sort and categorize items, so she could get all the bread, all the dairy products etc. at one time without having to scan the list for items in each section of the store.

So I sat down to write Speedo Shopper. It was pretty crude at first. My wife was my beta tester. She would use it, and then tell me what was needed, or what didn't work right. Over time, it began to develop into quite a project. I ended up including features you probably won't find in other shopping list generators. Like emailing your grocery list to yourself at a specific time. When would THAT come in handy? Well, turns out my wife would anticipate forgetting her printed copy of the list, and always set the program to email her the list, whether she needed it or not. It wasn't long before when she was at a friends house, she had forgotten her printed list; (it was sitting next to the computer right where she left it). And while she was there realizing this, the program sent the list to her Blackberry. Then she realized that not only did that save her going back across town to get it, it saved paper. That forgotten list was the last one she ever printed! Shopping by Blackberry came into being.

When she returned from shopping, she would take the grocery receipts and input the prices for the items she had just bought. Eventually she had the prices in for almost everything we would ever buy, so she would get an accurate total of what the grocery bill was going to be for that trip.

Other features soon were discovered to be essential to the busy life she has. She made me add a todo reminder . It would now not only email her the grocery list, but also any tasks she needed to complete that day.

At first, the program came with a set of fixed categories. No good. She figured out she could also create errand lists as well. She needed to be able to add her own categories. So I added a Category Manager . She created a category called Errands, and instead of putting grocery items in that category, she put in the errands she does semi-regularly. Go to Walmart. Pick up the dry cleaning. She just needed to select it, and on the list it went.

She also liked that she could save the list. Made it easier to create one the next time, because many items we needed every trip, like milk, eggs etc. So she saved a list with just those items, and when needed, would open it up and save it as something else, like Safeway List or Albertson's List. She would always start out with the "common list".

I continue to add features to Speedo Shopper. You may not have use for some of them, but it is still a great little list creator, even without those bells and whistles.
